In this workshop the presenters will guide participants through the revised NYS Learning Standards for World Languages at Checkpoint A, sharing classroom activity and instructional strategies. As members of the OHM BOCES checkpoint assessment team, the presenters will also share tips and recommendations for assessments and performance indicators.

It can be a unique experience to teach language in a non-public school: from tiny class sizes to a lack of fellow department members, many language teachers find the experience to be an isolating one. This session will provide an opportunity to meet other teachers in similar situations, share concerns and successes, and establish a network for potential future collaboration.

Michael is a Spanish teacher with 26 years of experience and Olivia is a French teacher with 4 years of experience. Both started working together on their district curriculum review team. Presenters will share their process of collaborating with different perspectives and sharing ideas as they create new thematic resources that are universal to any language. Participants will have time to collaborate together and create. Examples will be given in French and Spanish.
In our diverse classrooms, students bring unique identities, language varieties, and cultural backgrounds, including those of heritage language learners. As educators, we must respect and empower students to embrace their individuality and heritage. This presentation explores challenges like the implications of asking 'where are you from?', correctly addressing students by their names, appreciating language varieties, and implementing trauma-informed teaching. We'll discuss strategies for creating an inclusive environment that celebrates student diversity, including heritage language learners, fostering respect and belonging. Do you want your students to feel connected to their work and why they are doing it? Do you want your students to see the connections with the target language and culture? In this session, the presenter will walk you through several teacher-created examples that focus on connecting authentic resources, realistic purposes, and real audiences, while incorporating and soliciting student interest through transfer tasks that have been created while working with Dr. Jennifer Eddy of Queens College. The Spanish examples shown will include the sources, rubrics, and other related materials. The projects shown can be modified for different levels and languages. If there is time, participants can begin their own during the session.
This session will provide insight into the preparation required for successful student experiences with stations at various language proficiency levels where facilitators will share both prepared and AI-generated resources offering examples of potential station activities. This will allow participants to explore different types of stations, and how to start building their own library of station activities to put to immediate use in their classrooms.
Looking for a way to get your students writing and speaking for an audience other than you and their classmates? Have you tried international pen pals but found the wait too long between letters or that the language proficiency level did not match? If yes, then come and hear about our Pen Pal Project. Participants will learn about how our project was started, activities that we do, and what we have planned for the future. This workshop will empower language educators by providing a comprehensive exploration of the tools offered by Magic School AI. Ever have students give up on a reading task before they start? Do students ever tell you that they don’t understand anything when they listen to a text? Are your students hesitant to perform speaking tasks? In this workshop, your presenters will give examples of how they have used a proficiency-based mindset and sequenced and scaffolded activities to boost student confidence and performance. They will share strategies that they have used to help tackle tasks in the target language and assist students to confidently move through communication modes.
Incorporating crafts can be a great introduction or can be used as a summative activity to highlight aspects of different cultures. In this workshop, teachers will learn how they can turn the instructions for most crafts into highly comprehensible material (with scaffolding). In addition, attendees will see how videos allow a person of limited language ability to follow along and complete the tasks. In this workshop, attendees will learn about several projects, suggestions for how to incorporate other disciplines and all the resources necessary! All crafts can be modified in order to reduce the costs. Most crafts presented will be from Mexico, along with how to videos in Spanish.

This proposal promotes the integration of community-engaged learning (CEL) methodologies into the French language classroom curriculum. By blending theory with practical experience, students not only enhance their linguistic skills but also develop cultural understanding and empathy. We will delve into the theoretical framework supporting CEL and showcase its application through a case study of collaboration between the French language program at Nazareth University and Rochester Refugee Resettlement Services in Rochester. Through this partnership, students engage in meaningful interactions with refugee communities from French-speaking Africa, enhancing their language skills while fostering social justice and intercultural competence.

There is no typical learner; every learner is unique and brings a distinct set of academic needs into the educational system. Meeting the needs of learners with visible and invisible disabilities begins with digital formatting. This session focuses on the accessibility features and considerations for common learning tools in the field of education (such as MSWord, Google docs, PowerPoint, Slides). The goal is to raise awareness of the tools’ features, and the hope is that accessibility practices will become second nature at the onset of content creation. The session will be interactive so please bring a sample that you can examine for accessibility.
As language educators, our goal is to help students achieve fluency and proficiency. However, upper-level Italian courses often emphasize grammar drills and memorization, impeding communicative competence. Comprehensible input strategies provide a practical solution by offering engaging and meaningful language input that enhances language acquisition and fluency. Storytelling uses narratives to make new vocabulary and grammar memorable. Participants will receive adaptable templates to implement these strategies in various contexts, themes, and grammatical structures, creating a more communicative and engaging learning environment.
