Knowing why something works—or why it may fall short—goes a long way when designing tasks, resources, and lessons. This session will illuminate five principles about the brain that teachers can use both to tweak their current practices for the better and to devise new tasks and resources that help students build proficiency and confidence.

The swift increase in Open Access resources allows for K-12 practitioners to have access to current scholarly research in language learning theories and practices. This session provides a quick historical overview of the movement and delves into recent articles published in the Modern Language Journal and engages participants in a thoughtful discussion of ways to improve their practice.

Incorporating crafts can be a great introduction or can be used as a summative activity to highlight aspects of different cultures. In this workshop, teachers will learn how they can turn the instructions for most crafts into highly comprehensible material (with scaffolding). In addition, attendees will see how videos allow a person of limited language ability to follow along and complete the tasks. In this workshop, attendees will learn about several projects, suggestions for how to incorporate other disciplines and all the resources necessary! All crafts can be modified in order to reduce the costs. Most crafts presented will be from Mexico, along with how to videos in Spanish.
