Let's explore how we can use comprehensible input strategies such as Clip Chat, Picture Talk, Traveling Dictation and more, combined with cultural topics for this hands-on workshop! This workshop will equip you to lead with authentic cultural content in a comprehensible way! We'll explore how to consider social justice topics and use authentic resources such as images, art, music, legends, geography, and film to design comprehensible input activities. Through these activities, you'll discover how to connect with the target culture while ensuring understanding for ALL learners. Dive deep – join us for a cultural adventure in language learning!

This presentation describes the ins-and-outs of how to begin to implement a classroom library or independent reading program in your classroom. We will review physical and digital libraries and get you ready for literary success! Topics include: how to arrange your shelves, how to get your routine up and running, where to source materials, activity ideas to boost engagement, and what to do to entice students who are less than enthusiastic about pleasure reading.

You are committed to speaking as much target language as possible, but what do you talk about and how do you make sure your students understand what is being said? In this session, participants will explore ideas and strategies for presenting vocabulary in context using comprehensible input, scaffolding, and student language supports, and tips for checking student comprehension.

Helping students stay in the TL often is to take a step back to build them up to grow their confidence. Layered Activities do that. Layered Activities sequence similar classroom tasks in a lesson, so the format and rules of the activity remain consistent, but the content expectations become progressively more complex.. Knowing why something works—or why it may fall short—goes a long way when designing tasks, resources, and lessons. This session will illuminate five principles about the brain that teachers can use both to tweak their current practices for the better and to devise new tasks and resources that help students build proficiency and confidence.

The swift increase in Open Access resources allows for K-12 practitioners to have access to current scholarly research in language learning theories and practices. This session provides a quick historical overview of the movement and delves into recent articles published in the Modern Language Journal and engages participants in a thoughtful discussion of ways to improve their practice.

Incorporating crafts can be a great introduction or can be used as a summative activity to highlight aspects of different cultures. In this workshop, teachers will learn how they can turn the instructions for most crafts into highly comprehensible material (with scaffolding). In addition, attendees will see how videos allow a person of limited language ability to follow along and complete the tasks. In this workshop, attendees will learn about several projects, suggestions for how to incorporate other disciplines and all the resources necessary! All crafts can be modified in order to reduce the costs. Most crafts presented will be from Mexico, along with how to videos in Spanish.
